Hunter shoots an elephant that killed 15 in India

Rogue Elephant Kills 15 In Bihar, Jharkhand, Could Be Shot, Say Officials

The rogue elephant, which strayed into Jharkhand after killing four persons in Bihar, had terrorised Pahariya tribals living on the hills of Sahibganj.

Nawab Shafat Ali Khan - one of India's best hunters - and his hunting team went after the elephant, shooting it point blank to ensure that it could not survive the bullets, according to Yahoo News. "But that is the last resort and we will take a call in a day or two".

"If we had been hit by his truck it could have been fatal".

According to forest officials, a hunter shot two bullets on the head of the animal, and another round was sacked as a confirmation shot. "It was a risky operation", Khan said of the hunt in Sahibganj district of the eastern state of Jharkhand.

An elephant that has killed 15 people in Bihar and Jharkhand over a months-long rampage could be shot within days if it is not brought under control, an official said Wednesday.

The area is inhabited by the Paharia tribe, one of the poorest indigenous tribal communities in India.

Forest officials tried to tranquilize the elephant from a distance of 30 meters, but the animal suddenly ran to charge them, forcing the hunter to open fire, reported Hindustan Times.

Khan, who has carried out 24 previous government-sanctioned hunting missions, said he was baffled by the elephant's behaviour.

The sharpshooter was last roped in by authorities in western Maharastra state, where he tranquilised a killer tiger. It must be noted that Saturday was World Elephant Day , As Reported By Siyasat.

"I prefer tranquilising animals".

Violent encounters between elephants and humans were an "increasing trend", said Mr Singh, as vast swathes of forest are cleared for human settlements or industry.
