2 soldiers killed as gun battle rages in Kashmir's Shopian, cops wounded in another encounter

On Saturday evening, Kashmir's inspector general of police, Muneer Khan told a local newspaper that several militants were surrounded by forces in Shopian, but another bunch was shooting at the security team from an open area outside the cordon. The security forces also opened fire in response and a gun battle ensued.

Yatoo is a resident of Chadoora in Budgam district and had joined militancy in 1997 after crossing the POK for arms training.

The house in Awneera village in which the militants had been hiding was blasted by the security forces.

Five soldiers were injured in the gunfight on Saturday night and had to be evacuated to 92 Base Hospital of the Army for treatment. One Kevyt Konekivaan (KK) series rifle, reportedly used by Itoo, and two AK series rifles were recovered from the encounter scene. Two injured soldiers later succumbed to critical injuries. He said he was also involved in bank robbery case of PS Yaripora.

Martyr Sep Gawai Sumedh Waman, 25 years of age, had joined the Army in 2011 and hailed from Village Lonagra in Akola, Maharashtra.

In another incident, three security personnel, including two policemen and an army soldier, sustained injuries when militants fired at a cordon laying party in Hajin area of Bandipora district on Sunday. He is survived by his Parents, one brother and one sister.
