Gorakhpur tragedy: Guilty will face action, says UP deputy CM Keshav Maurya

Earlier in the day, the alleged disruption in the supply of liquid oxygen at the hospital claimed lives of three more children.

"What followed was complete chaos as panic-stricken relatives of patients ran for help, and with the support of hospital staff tried to maintain supply of oxygen. using artificial manual breathing bags".

Responding to the UP Chief Minister's request, Nadda said, the Centre has approved Rs 85 crore for setting up a central Viral Research Centre in Gorakhpur.

Yogi Adityanath today said, "I was here on the 9th and I categorically asked about encephalitis but no one informed me".

The deaths are being blamed on infections and possible disruption of oxygen supply in the paediatrics ward but the hospital and district administration have rejected oxygen shortage as a reason. Rautela was quoted by PTI as saying that 17 children died in the neo-natal ward, five in the AES (acute encephalitis syndrome) ward and eight in the general ward. Of the 30 deaths, 17 took place in the neonatal intensive care unit. "Those found guilty will not be spared".

Taking a swipe at the Uttar Pradesh health minister, the Congress leader tweeted, "UP Health Minister only seeks votes in Lal Bahadur Shastri ji's name -he doesn't follow Shastri ji's high morals in politics..."

Further, Azad urged the state health minister Siddharth Nath Singh to submit his resignation immediately.

At least 60 children have died at a hospital in northern India over the past week amid an outbreak of encephalitis and disputed reports of disrupted supplies.

Vaibhav Maheshwari, state spokesman of AAP told IANS "it was a matter of shame that the Chief Minister was mum on such a serious issue and that the state government was trying to defuse facts".

But according to PTI, a Union home ministry statement that quoted the Gorakhpur police superintendent said 21 children died because of shortage of oxygen.

The Health Minister also presented a data mentioning about the deaths which had occurred in the month of August in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

The hospital had defaulted on the payment for oxygen as a result of which the firm sending the cylinders had stopped supply.

They also said that a probe, led by the state chief secretary, had been ordered.
