His family confirmed the news in a statement to a Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter, stating, "Legendary entertainer Jerry Lewis passed away peacefully today of natural causes at 91 at his home [with] family by his side". After their split in 1956, he starred in and directed a slew of hit films such as "The Nutty Professor".
Lewis rose to stardom during the golden age of television, and was considered to be one of the most influential comics of the 20th century.
In 2008 he received the Academy Of Motion Science and Pictures' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his work with children afflicted with muscular dystrophy.
Following this, he recorded an album - Jerry Lewis Just Sings - which sold a million and a half copies. During Lewis' run as presenter, the telethon raised almost $2.5 billion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Jerry Lewis made more than 50 films in his career. In addition, numerous Broadway stars and casts appeared on his Muscular Dystrophy Association telethons for which he hosted the live Labor Day broadcast of the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon for 44 years.
