Alexander Zverev beaten by wildcard Frances Tiafoe in Cincinnati — ATP Tour

Alexander Zverev of Germany reacts after scoring a point against Roger Federer of Switzerland during day ten of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank at Uniprix Stadium

1 Nadal saw off Richard Gasquet to advance to the round of 16.

The 20-year-old Zverev, the victor last week in Washington, D.C., matched Federer with a fifth tournament title this year.

Roger Federer was also forced to withdraw from Cincinnati after struggling with a back problem and his absence in OH gave Nadal a clear run at the number one spot. He has not topped the rankings since July 2014.

'I'm the only one of these top players that missed a lot of important tournaments in my career. "It's something very important and very hard". I'm very sorry for all of them and I wish all of them a fast and good recovery.

"Just to be back to that position makes me happy and of course it is going to be an emotional moment for me".

Next for Nadal, who had a first-round bye, is a third-round matchup with 24th-ranked countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Zverev said the toll of his extraordinary run caught up with him this week. "I've been dead for the past two days".

"I had a bit of muscle pain, aches and pains here and there, just because it's back on the match courts, on the hard courts".

USA 19-year-old wildcard Frances Tiafoe beat the seventh-ranked German 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a second-round matchup at the year's last major tuneup for the Open, which begins August 28.

"I'm happy it finally happened", Tiafoe said. I've beaten a lot of top-10 players.

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, hit 17 aces in defeating Czech 10th seed Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-0 while Japan's Yuichi Sugita took advantage of 43 unforced errors by Jack Sock to oust the US 13th seed 7-5, 6-4.

"I'm someone who keeps my promises", Zverev said.

Tiafoe forced two break and match points in the last game.

Mental toughness has always been associated as an important trait amongst successful sportspeople, something which Zverev demonstrated in abundance against Wawrinka, coming from a break down to clinch the deciding set.

"I couldn't believe it. I've played a lot of big matches", Zverev said. "These are ones that change a career".

But he lost 6-4 3-6 4-6 to 19-year-old Tiafoe, the world number 87.

"It's a tough loss", Kerber said.

In the women's event, world number nine Venus Williams was knocked out in the second round by Australian qualifier Ashleigh Barty.

The invaluable experiences continued to help with Zverev's development, featuring in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time during Wimbledon in 2015.
