14 arrests, reports of violence during Berkeley protests

Berkeley counter-protest organizer Tur Ha Ak speaks the day after Sunday demonstration

In preparation for the gathering, Berkeley had assigned nearly 50 police officers around the perimeters and had announced that weapons such as sticks were not allowed at the event. Even though the violence at the rally became the primary narrative, thousands more non-violent protesters came out to march peacefully and display some awesome signs at the Berkeley Rally Against Hate, so here's a collection of some of the best. Berkeley Police Lieutenant Joe Okies told The Washington Post that the rally garnered 13 arrests on charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to city municipal code violations.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi broke her silence on last weekend's Berkeley mayhem by emphasizing the importance of peaceful protest without actually mentioning the antifa or other leftist groups behind the violence. "We felt disappointed and surprised by how many people were not in any way discreet about being with antifa - in fact being very bold and prepared to be violent".

- Young men and women clad in black bandanas overtook Berkeley for several hours, creating a menacing atmosphere and yielding 13 arrests amidst a crowd of at least 2,000. According to city officials, they denied at least three requests for permits, the Times reported.

"I believe it's important to confront Nazis and white supremacists directly, show them they're not welcome in the Bay Area and as a medic, I'm here to support the counter protesters by providing water and first aid", he says.

In February, protests that erupted at UC Berkeley ahead of a planned appearance by right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos caused $100,000 worth of damage to the campus, the school said. Civic Center Park, according to local media.

But on Friday night, organizer Joey Gibson said he was canceling the event, fearing violence.

Earlier in the day, police had set up barricades around park and checked people who entered to make sure they did not have prohibited items like baseball bats, dogs, skateboards and scarves or bandanas they could use to cover their faces.

At one point, an anti-rally protester denounced a Latino man holding a "God Bless Donald Trump" sign. "You should be ashamed of yourself".

Others said that the violence on Sunday in nearby Berkeley, known as the United States heart of the free speech movement, tarnished their peaceful opposition to Trump's policies.

RT's Ruptly agency's feed from the scene was abruptly cut off after masked protesters, purportedly members of Antifa, approached the camera and demanded the crew "move that thing". A separate gathering, dubbed the "No to Marxism" rally, was scheduled for Sunday in Berkeley, Calif.

Left and right-wing groups were protesting in Berkeley on Sunday after a planned anti-Marxism demonstration was cancelled due to safety concerns. If we don't stand against the attack on free speech in Berkeley, then it won't be long before it's in my neighborhood and I have to be anxious about my political beliefs. Two protests in April saw some violence, one taking place on the 27th over the cancellation of a talk by right-wing commentator Ann Coulter was the most peaceful.
