U.S. to Increase Pressure on China to Enforce Sanctions Against North Korea

Earlier this week, North Korea tested what it called its first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which it said was capable of traveling much longer distances than the projectiles it had tested before.

The Reuters report noted that Trump campaigned for the presidency on a position of cracking down on China for its trade practices, but has softened his tone after taking office, instead placing emphasis on working with China on the issue of North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

"It's got to do more", Sen. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY said it was "disgraceful" and said it was a "grave dereliction of duty" to give "equal credence to the findings of the American Intelligence Community and the assertion by Mr. Putin". USA and Chinese officials suggested they were satisfied with the talks, which ran for about 90 minutes.

The two countries also signaled closer military ties. Diplomats said on Friday that negotiations on the statement had stalled.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) made the remark in an interview with MSNBC after a declaration of the G20 summit made no mention of the North. The House Majority Whip was critically injured when James Hodgkinson opened fire on the charity game training session last month.

It is unclear when the Senate could move on a measure. "Where did the bromance go?" lamented Hong Kong's South China Morning Post. When Congress returns in September, it must turn its attention to funding the government beyond the end of the 2017 fiscal year, among other approaching deadlines.

It also said China would participate in the 2018 Rim of the Pacific military exercises, a biennial event known as the world's largest global maritime military exercise.

As we've said, they focused on a ceasefire on Syria, focused on making sure that we have a cyber unit to make sure that Russian Federation and nobody else interferes in any democratic elections. From the United State's point of view, this is completely absurb, yet continues to work for North Korea.

The Trump-Xi meeting lasted over an hour-and-a-half and followed a tweet by Trump just days before the summit in which he admonished Xi for not doing more to curb North Korea's nuclear capabilities. But there is growing concern among both Congress and the White House that China is not exerting the kind of pressure on the regime that is necessary. Trump raised the issue of Russia's meddling in the 2016 elections and discussed plans for a cease-fire agreement in Syria.

Q General McMaster, can you address not the question of how President Trump handled it, but the question of how Putin and Lavrov have handled it.

"I don't like to talk about what I have planned, but I have some pretty severe things that we're thinking about", the president said.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe praised Donald Trump on Saturday after a meeting the president organized with Asian allies at the G-20 Summit, while also noting the severity of the threat North Korea poses on the global stage.

President Donald Trump believes Russian Federation was not alone in interfering with the United States elections and other countries such as China and North Korea too have meddled in American polls over the years, one of his top aides said on Sunday.

Adam Mount, a senior fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress, is more concerned by Tuesday's coordinated message. "It may take longer than I'd like".

Russel and others advise one other note of caution when interpreting the joint nature of the statement. One is that even if a shattered economy does not change North Korea's attitudes, it could very well destroy the country's ability to act on them.

But China has leverage, too, which is why previous United States administrations have held back. Trump called on the USA and its Western allies to confront common threats, while promising the values of the U.S.
