Weather agency confirms tornado in Louisiana

A trailer home where two people were killed after a possible tornado, is damaged in Breaux Bridge, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, U.S., April 2, 2017.

The National Weather Service says Iredell is on the fringe of the possible storm, but there still is a chance for severe weather conditions Monday and again on Wednesday, especially in the southern end of the county.

The state's southwest would be at risk of tornadoes from around 8 a.m. until midday Monday before the storms moved into southeastern Alabama and and parts of western Georgia, Guy said.

The tornado caused their trailer to flip off its blocks, according to Major Ginny Higgins with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, killing Francine Gotch, 38, and 3-year-old daughter Neville Alexander. Local officials called it a possible tornado but the governor says it was straight-line winds. He urged people to keep their cellphones charged and close by so that they could get severe weather alerts through Monday. Witnesses told KLFY-TV that the father was at the store when the storm hit and returned to find the bodies amid the splintered debris.

Strong storms could still produce tornadoes in the area from southeastern Louisiana into central and southern MS overnight, before moving further east early Monday, CNN Meteorologist Michael Guy said.

More than 27,000 homes and businesses were without power across Alabama Monday, according to Alabama Power.

One death has been confirmed in the state and damage reports were being collected elsewhere. "She was only three years old but was the smartest girl in the world". The storm also brought hurricane-force winds, large hail and sparked flash flooding.

In the town of Glendora, a woman died Sunday night when a tree fell onto her house, the AP also reported.

Several school districts in Alabama were closed or planned to dismiss students early Monday as the state prepared for damaging storms. Schools, including LSU Alexandria, were closed for the day Monday, she said.

"This is a statewide weather event", the governor said.

There also was flooding and wind damage in central MS, with water rescues in the Vicksburg area, Lamb said. The roof was completely removed.

Tornado watches issued for Charlotte, North Carolina, and about a dozen counties in North and SC until 9 p.m. have been canceled, the National Weather Service said.
