So with the death of PittsburghSteelers owner Dan Rooney, it's not an exaggeration to say a king has passed away. Rooney, the powerful and popular Steelers chairman whose name is attached to the NFL's landmark initiative in minority hiring, died Thursday, April 13, 2017. "He was committed, humble, hard-working, loyal and never forgot where he came from". He and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers set the standard for operating a first-class professional sports franchise - both on and off the field - and his generous contributions to our community will never be forgotten. I feel very fortunate to have known him.
Rooney, whose father, Art, paid a $2,500 fee for the Steelers to join the National Football League in 1933, is survived by his wife, Patricia, and seven of the couple's nine children. "On behalf of every Pennsylvanian, Frances and I express our deepest condolences to the Rooney family, Dan's friends and colleagues, and every member of Steeler Nation, and we encourage Pennsylvanians statewide to join us in this tribute".
Penguins players will wear special decals on their helmets in Rooney's memory.
