Rainn Wilson joins new 'Star Trek' TV series

039;Star Trek Discovery' Will Feature Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd

CBS had meant to use the space drama to launch All Access' original programming slate, but delays led the network to move up The Good Fight to February and postpone Discovery's rollout until late summer or early fall.

Mudd, originally played by Roger C. Carmel, has appeared several times throughout the franchise. Since Discovery takes place 10 years before the events of TOS, Wilson's iteration might not be quite so steeped in illegal activity.

There's no official word yet on how many episodes Wilson will appear in, but we hope he's in as many as possible and so does everyone making the most of Wilson's casting on Twitter.

The Office alum Rainn Wilson has been cast in Star Trek: Discovery.

Of course, Star Trek fans will know exactly who that is.

Wilson is best known for his performance as Dwight Schrute in the cult favorite comedy "The Office", in which he was even nominated an Emmy Award for. The actor now joins previously announced cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo, James Frain, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy, Sam Vartholomeos, Jason Isaacs, and Mary Wiseman.

Whether or not Star Trek: Discovery will retain that sense of fun surrounding Harry Mudd, remains to be seen.

Mudd was sort of charming, mostly sleazy, and bringing him back does a lot to get me excited about Star Trek: Discovery all over again.
