Mom of Elizabeth Thomas violently abused her, court docs allege

Anthony Thomas called Cummins "a very poor excuse for a teacher and authority figure, a father. he's a poor excuse for a human being", reacting to an interview with Cummins' sister defending her brother's actions.

S. Jason Whatley said Tuesday the community's outpouring of love and support for the Thomas family has been overwhelming.

Cummins, who appeared at an arraignment in Sacamento, walked into court wearing an orange prison jumpsuit that said "Sac Co prisoner" and he was shackled with a chain around his waist. He and his wife would take that girl to church.

Cummins wanted to flee Tennessee with Thomas because he was being investigated for having an innapporpriate relationship with her. Cummins was sacked by the Maury County, Tennessee school system the day of the two disappeared.

In divorce documents, he said the 50-year-old teacher used his position of authority to "prey upon her, groom her, and ultimately entice her into running away with him". Cummins, 50, was taken into federal custody Thursday.

Cummins and Thomas became the subject of a nationwide search after he apparently lured the girl into his vehicle outside a restaurant in Columbia, Tennessee, about 45 miles (72.4 km) south of Nashville. He had taken out a $4,500 loan the previous week, his wife told investigators. In Oklahoma, he bought KY Jelly, a lubricant used for sex, and before leaving Tennessee he refilled a prescription for Cialis, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, showing he meant to have sex with the minor, prosecutors said.

They were discovered in a remote cabin in Cecilville, California, after a tipster saw the pair and contacted authorities on Wednesday night, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Since then, the two had been spotted at a Walmart in Oklahoma City - where according to a criminal complaint, Cummins made reservations at Super 8 motels in March. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office said that the cabin where the two had stayed was a one-room unit with a foam mattress and camp stove.

Quinn did not say whether she believes her brother or not, but added: 'He's done this awful thing, that he has to pay for.

Cummins had passed himself off as a down-on-his-luck Colorado man who'd just lost his job and home, Barry said.

A short time later, Barry saw the pair on an Amber alert.

Department spokesman Rob Johnson said he could not comment on the case.

Elizabeth has asked to see her baby sister, Thomas said, but he said most of their conversations are about trying to "just keep things positive", according to ABC News. "He needs to be held accountable for kidnapping this girl", Gwyn said.
