Jon Ossoff Evades Question on When He's Held Democrats Accountable

Based on his position, the difficulty of accurately predicting special election turnout, the polls' margins of error, and Ossoff's financial advantage, we are changing the Inside Elections rating from Lean Republican to Toss-Up.

National money, attention, and political staffers have been flowing into Georgia's 6th Congressional District for weeks. Most of the seats are vacant because their previous representatives were selected to serve within President Trump's administration.

The seat became open after Tom Price resigned from the House to become Secretary of Health and Human Services. Cory Booker, so it's likely a lot of that cash is from out of state.

Is Jon Ossoff - a Democrat running for Congress in Georgia's 6th District - a Star Wars nerd who drank in college, or a terrorist sympathizer? Dan Moody is next in line with 7 percent.

If no candidate breaks 50 percent, the top two finishers go on to a runoff election June 20.

To those voters, a Republican with strong name recognition - such as former Secretary of State Karen Handel - who campaigns on not being "a rubberstamp for Trump" might hold some appeal, he said.

According to one Republican super PAC, he's both. And that has Republicans increasingly desperate and terrified of losing this reliably safe seat.

Due to now-former Representative Mike Pompeo having been chosen as Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director, the Representative seat in Kansas' 4th District is now vacant. If the race goes to that second round, a Republican would be favored in the right-leaning district.

Michael Owens, who chairs the Cobb County Democratic Party, said Democrats are also hoping to capitalize on what he called an "awakening of people getting involved in the civic and electoral process". The top two candidates will advance regardless of party. It is the kind of affluent suburban district that Democrats will need to win to take back the House in 2018, and although Republicans have publicly expressed confidence in their candidates, their actions betray their fears about a Democratic resurgence.

Ossoff's campaign disclosed raising $8.3 million to the Federal Election Commission from January 3 through March 29, a total it called a quarterly record for a congressional campaign that isn't self-financed by a candidate.

President Donald Trump narrowly defeated his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the sixth district and Democrats see it as an opportunity to flip a GOP seat and to provide a referendum on his presidency so far.
