Aaron Hernandez's family wants to donate his brain to science, but MA officials are refusing to release it despite turning over the rest of his body to a funeral home, the former National Football League star's lawyer said on Thursday. The letters didn't offer any insight into why the 27-year-old committed suicide.
Baez, who successfully defended Hernandez in his most recent trial, on Thursday said the medical examiner's office had turned over Hernandez' remains to his family but retained his brain. "We're very lucky that Boston University is right here in our backyard and we want to take full advantage of the resources".
Baez had said earlier that the Hernandez family has already received the rest of his body.
"If we don't get answers quickly we're going straight to court", said Baez. "It is literally a destruction of evidence".
The state medical examiner said the cause of death was axphyxia by hanging, District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said in a statement Thursday.
"Now that the cause and manner of death have been determined, the brain will be released to Boston University's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center as Mr. Hernandez's family wishes", the District Attorney's office said.
As Celebrity Insider readers know, Hernandez was discovered dead in his jail cell by corrections officers at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in MA around 3:05 a.m. on Wednesday.
The state medical examiner's office is performing an autopsy on Hernandez, who was convicted of shooting and killing Odin Lloyd in 2013, as part of an investigation into the death of the former National Football League star. Per Chris Villani of the Boston Herald, the notes were addressed to his daughter and fiancee.
Furthermore, Boston's WHDH is reporting that at least one DOC officer could be facing discipline for Hernandez's suicide.
They said they found three handwritten notes in his call, along with a reference to the Bible verse John 3:16, which was something Baez would not comment on during his news conference Thursday afternoon when challenged by FOX25's Bob Ward. Hernandez was found dead in his cell on Wednesday.
