Hyundai, Kia recall 170000 cars in South Korea over engine

An analyst estimates that the recall could be quite pricy, setting the companies back 250 billion won (roughly $220.19 million).

All the vehicles in question possess one of two engines - a 2.4-liter, direct injected, naturally aspirated I4, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4.

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 572,000 model year 2013-2014 Sonatas and Santa Fe Sports.

But while the automaker recalled 470,000 Sonata (YF) vehicles in the United States at the time, it has argued that its Theta 2 engine vehicles produced in South Korea were not subject to the recall.

In South Korea, the companies will recall 171,348 cars - Hyundai's Sonata (YFa) and Santafe (AN), and Kia's K5 (QF), Sorento (XMa) and Sportage (SL) models, Yonhap reported. Here, technicians will inspect the engine and install a new short block if necessary.

Hyundai and Kia have submitted similar plans to the USA authorities which request the permission to recall a tentative number of vehicles in the country in order to rectify an engine issue similar to South Korea.

Neither company would estimate the potential cost of the recall. NHTSA's defect report on the Kia vehicles affected by the recall explains that after the engines' crankshafts were machined, their oil passages may not have been completely cleared of metallic debris.

The Hyundai spokesperson said the latest recall involves a new problem. The recall in Korea will initiate on May 22 and the exact schedule of the recall in the USA has not been decided yet.

Johnson said that both engines were made at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant in Montgomery, Ala.

Hyundai Motor shares closed down 2.4 per cent, compared to a flat broader market.

"If their engines turn out to be faulty, Hyundai or Kia will replace them with engines that are problem-free".
