While the vastly experienced Clinton won the popular vote, she lost the electoral college to the businessman who had never previously held public office, upending the world and the United States political establishment.

Speaking at the eighth annual Women in the World Summit in New York City, the former secretary of state said that she was "deeply concerned about Russian Federation", and not simply because of allegations that the Kremlin's meddling is a major reason why she is not the sitting president of the United States.

Her plan would have seen the USA arm anti-Assad rebels "to provide back-up to what I thought would be a one-sided battle", she said, adding: "This was before [Islamic State]".

The Russian hackings, she said, appeared to be a "more effective theft than even Watergate (the major USA political scandal that occurred in the 1970s)".

Clinton said that if she were in power, she would have told the Russian they were "either with us or against us on this no-fly zone".


Although Clinton supports bombing Syrian government targets, she noted Friday that it was hypocritical for Trump to use Syrian children as the justification when he'd signed an executive order banning all Syrian refugees from entering the country shortly after taking office. Russian Federation has denied the hacking allegations. Kristof was referring to the current commander-in-chief, President Donald Trump.

Clinton also criticized Trump's reluctance to admit Syrian refugees to the US. "And the classic picture of all of the men sitting around the table, deciding how they were going to defund Planned Parenthood, end maternity care, end access for insurance for family planning for contraception - looking at that picture, you just think it's got to be from a skit from Saturday Night Live".

Representative Devin Nunes, a Republican, is under investigation for supposedly disclosing classified information and stepped aside from the congressional inquiry into Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election. Representative Mike Conaway, the second-ranked Republican on the House of Representatives intelligence committee, will now lead the probe. "But then the Comey letter coming as it did - just 10 days before the election - really raised questions in a lot of people".

The Democrat did not name Trump but concluded that the strike serve as a reminder that "politics matter enormously".

Clinton appeared on stage at the Women in the World Conference in New York on Thursday for a Q&A with the New York Times' Nick Kristof.
