Genesis Wows New York Auto Show With Futuristic Fuel Cell SUV

Genesis GV80 concept 2017 New York auto show

Hyundai Motor Co.'s luxury brand, Genesis Motors, unveiled a sleek concept SUV on Wednesday that the company said is representative of the brand's evolution. This is the brand's first go at a luxury SUV. The styling is a refinement of their signature "Athletic Elegance", with the GV80, "reveals precision details and a confidently evolved design language that provides subtle glimpses into the bold future of Genesis' design and product development".

Now that Genesis, Hyundai's luxury brand, has established itself with the G80 and G90 sedans, it's looking to expand its lineup with SUVs.

The vehicle, called the GV80 Concept, teases the first of two crossovers Genesis has promised by 2020. "You can surmise that this concept will eventually find its way into the CUV segment". Toyota, Honda and Hyundai all have fuel cell programs. It appears that Genesis has squarely aimed the vehicle at the same market segment as the Jaguar F-Pace, given the two cars' design-led approach and similar size.

"The infrastructure is growing on a daily basis". They also confirmed plans to study the potential benefits of fuel cells as well as other alternative green powertrain technologies for all types of upcoming Genesis models. Futuristic details like laser fiber optic quad tail lamps and 23-inch mesh alloy wheels will make sure everyone notices you have an expensive vehicle. Electronic door handles sit flush underneath the concept's dynamic crease line for enhanced aerodynamic performance and simplicity. The defining element is a 22-inch OLED display screen that runs most of the length of the dash, and is paired with a digital instrument cluster for the driver.

It has seating for four adults. The slate ash wood is also used in the cargo area along with dark gray leather. Sales of SUVs in the first quarter grew almost 10 percent while the overall vehicle market decreased 1.5 percent.

The 2-car Genesis lineup, which debuted early last fall in the USA, posted sales of 5,155 in first-quarter 2017, with the G80 mid-large sedan tallying 3,952 deliveries and the G90 large sedan 1,203.

Genesis brand chief Manfred Fitzgerald described the GV80 as an important step in creating Genesis. "Sales were up for both models over February".
