Cristiano Ronaldo statue at Madeira Airport raises questions

Cristiano Ronaldo was honored by his home of Funchal, in Madeira, on March 29, when the island's worldwide airport was renamed in his honor.

On Wednesday (Thursday AEDT), the Madeira airport outside Funchal will be renamed after Ronaldo in a ceremony attended by the Real Madrid player and his relatives.

CRISTIANO RONALDO has had Madeira's airport renamed after him - here are some photos of the facility.

Portugal played their first match in Madeira since 2001 on Tuesday, going down 3-2 to Sweden.

A statue of Cristiano Ronaldo unveiled at Madeira Airport on Wednesday has sent Twitter into meltdown over its apparent likeness to the footballer.

It squashed his eyes close together, and the cheeky raised-eyebrow smile resembled a leer. The face was also unusually chubby, in contrast to Ronaldo's chiselled looks.

" Cried one of our colleagues, discovering the last bronze bust bearing Cristiano Ronaldo's effigy".

The player said he was "happy and honoured" to have given his name to the airport.

Pictures of the terrfying bust has garnered a mixed reaction online with many football fans poking fun at statute's uncanny ability to sear its image into your brain.

"It's always a great honor to work on project like that", the bust's sculptor, Madeira native Emanuel Santos, told local TV channel RTP, according to the AP. "Seeing my name on this airport is something very special, every one knows I am proud of my roots and my land", Ronaldo said at a ceremony held at the airport.

Funchal has a Ronaldo statue and museum, as well as the Pestana CR7 Funchal Hotel, a second of which has since been opened in Lisbon.
