'Too soon' to say if new Doctor Who will be female

Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton is the frontrunner to be the new star of Doctor Who according to bookmakers odds

Rumours about who will take over from Peter Capaldi - who has played titular character since 2013 - when he bows out as the lead later this year have been rife in recent weeks, but the forthcoming 46-year-old show runner is adamant he's not even thinking that far ahead right now and just wants to make sure the story is flawless. Many outlets have tipped ethereal being Tilda Swinton to be the next actor to take on the part, but we've got a few other magical ideas.

The BBC sci-fi series's outgoing executive producer Steven Moffat previously suggested that the Doctor could, at some point, be a woman.

Commenting on the female stars who might make the tardis their new home, Ladbrokes spokeswoman Jessica Bridge told Yahoo: "Whovian punters are becoming increasingly convinced the next Doctor will be female, and fingers are now pointing towards Swinton".

Current Doctor, Capaldi, and previous lead star David Tennant (10th Doctor) have also pitched their candidates on who should play the role in "Doctor Who" season 11.

In the same interview, Sherlock co-creator Moffat also spoke about his own departure from Who after the next series, saying he'd nearly left the show at the end of Matt Smith's run: "For various reasons, during my third series I wasn't as happy. But I think he came close to staying".

Capaldi's final performance as the Doctor will be in the Christmas 2017 special episode. It was the only time doing Doctor Who where I felt it was slipping away from me a bit. "This will be the end for me".

Early frontrunners included The Night Manager star Olivia Colman, Ben Whishaw and Rory Kinnear, but now Michael Clayton's Tilda has jumped out in front in the race to find a new Doctor.

Many fans are now both sad and excited for "Doctor Who". It's a fantastic program to work on and it's been a huge pleasure to work with a family, really.
